Winifred Mary (Smith) Kurutz (age 91)
Winifred Kurutz (age 91) a descendent of William Floyd and Francis Hopkinson, two signers of the Declaration of Independence, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2012, with her family by her side at Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, FL.
Winifred was born in Newburgh, NY to Gertrude (Shields) Smith and Harold Arthur Smith along with two brothers and one sister. Later her family moved to Spring Valley, NY where in high school (she the cheerleader and he the athlete) she met her beloved husband John Kurutz. They were married for 62 years until John preceded her in death in April 2008 at the age of 86.
She worked as a bookkeeper in NY and upon her and husband John's retirements in 1976, moved to Key Largo, FL, where she went back to work at the Key Largo Elementary School as a teacher's aide working with the learning disabled and then later in the library until her final retirement.
She was very active in the United Methodist Church of Spring Valley, NY both singing in the choir and as the superintendent of Sunday schools until she relocated to Key Largo, where she continued to attend church and sing in the choir at the Burton Memorial Church.
Winifred is survived by two children, John N. Kurutz (Joanne) and Kathy L. Kurutz both of Key Largo; four grandchildren: Lisa Slaydon, Christopher J. Kurutz, Jennifer L. (Sean) Bailey, and Gretchen A. (John) Molina; four great grandchildren: Taylor, Joseph, Courtney, and Austin; and numerous nieces and nephews whom all loved her dearly.
Winifred will be remembered by her family and friends during the regular church service on Sunday, July 22, 2012 at the Burton Memorial Church at 10:30 a.m.
