William Piddington

Kill Devil Hills - NC:  William Kimball “Kim” Piddington died February 20th while vacationing in the Florida Keys.  He had hoped to regain his energy and strength while spending time with his family.  Kim was a Vietnam veteran in the U.S. Air Force.  Due to Agent Orange, he suffered from lung cancer and died battling cancer with a courageous attitude.

Born November 14, 1948 in Plainfield, NJ.  He grew up in New Jersey, Governor’s Island, New York and Fairfax, Virginia.  He graduated as Journeyman Carpenter from Carpenters & Joiner Local in Washington, D.C.

Kim moved to the Outer Banks in 1977 where he was a carpenter with his brother, Tom.  He joined the Colington Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) in 1978 and was the first paid firefighter and Chief for CVFD.  In 2014, Kim received the NC Long Leaf Pine Award for his service and dedication to the community.  He was a longtime member of the Nags Head Surf Fishing Club, Hatteras Surf Fishing Tournament and the team captain of the Fish Hawks.  He loved entertaining family and friends at his poolside tiki bar and was a lifelong fan of the Washington Redskins.

Preceded in death by his parents, Colonel Thomas C. & Nancy J. Piddington.  Surviving him is his wife, Elaine Michaux Hughes Piddington; two sons, Hampton Hughes Piddington and Hunter Watkins Piddington; from a previous marriage, two sons, Mike (Kelly) Piddington of Southern Shores; Cory (Cynthia) Piddington of Kill Devil Hills; and one daughter, Erika (Chad) Siek of Ashville. Six grandchildren:  Mia, Jack, Casey, Dominik, Gavin & Blake.

Two brothers also survive him:  Tom of Florida, Gerry (Jenny) of Pennsylvania, and two sisters, Anne Boggiono (Bob) of New Jersey and Susan Gardella (Dan) of Maryland.

A memorial service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, Southern Shores, NC on Saturday March 21st at 2 pm.  A celebration of life will be held at Michelle’s at Seascape at 4pm.
