Thaddeus Selby “Terry” Newell III, of Rochester, N.Y. and Nantucket, died peacefully Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018. He was 83.
Terry was born Dec. 10, 1934. He grew up in Rochester, attended Allen Creek School, the Allendale School and graduated from Brown University in 1957.
He was in the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps at Brown and upon graduation received his commission in the U.S. Navy, where he was assigned to the USS Cambria (9APA-36), stationed in the Mediterranean.
Terry joined the Quinby Co. in 1959, and in 1961 began a 30-year career at the Lincoln Rochester Trust Co., eventually starting the private banking department and retiring in 1990 as a senior vice president.
Philanthropy was very important to Terry. He chaired the Rochester Monroe County chapter of the American Red Cross and was awarded the Clara Barton Award. He also chaired the Crestwood Children’s Center before its merger with the Hillside Children’s Center. Terry volunteered for The United Way of Greater Rochester and was on the Allendale School board during the merger of Allendale and Columbia.
Diagnosed with prostate cancer 25 years ago, Terry gave new hope and meaning to “living with cancer.” Always a charismatic, positive person, Terry lived life to the fullest. He was a true gentleman.
Golf was his passion. He had five shadow boxes which hold golf balls from the many golf courses he was privileged to play. The highlight of his golfing career was taking his three sons to Ireland in 1998.
A proud member of the Country Club of Rochester for 64 years, Terry won the club championship in 1986. He was also a member of the Nantucket Yacht Club and Sankaty Head Golf Club, serving as a board member of Sankaty for six years.
In later years, Terry joined the Ocean Reef Club and The Key Largo Anglers Club, winning the golf club championship at Ocean Reef in 1993 and pursuing his love of fishing and duplicate bridge.
Terry truly enjoyed his friends and family and considered himself “The luckiest guy in the world.”
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sherley; and his sons Sherwood (Carolyn), Gordon (Chrys), Dana (Denise); and six grandchildren, Courtney, Gordie, Charlie, Andrew, Henry and Dominique. He is also survived by his brother, Frances D. Newell (Lanny); his nephew Douglas; niece Renee; and several cousins.
A celebration of Terry’s life will be held Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Fla.; and in Rochester at a date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Allendale Columbia School, 519 Allens Creek Road, Rochester, NY 14618; or The Ocean Reef Medical Center, 50 Barracuda Lane, Key Largo, FL 33037.
