Stephen Kalogeras

September 16, 1950 — September 10, 2012

Steve Kalogeras, 61, of Key Largo, FL died peacefully on September 10th surrounded by his family. Steve was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 16, 1950. He was the son of Nicholas and Christine (Paul) Kalogeras of Youngstown, OH. Steve grew up in the Greek Orthodox Church and was previously a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Youngstown, OH.
Steve was a 1969 graduate of Wilson High School in Youngstown, OH. After high school, he entered the Army and worked as a helicopter mechanic. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. The military afforded him the opportunity to travel the country and the world. After his military service, Steve worked at Commercial Shearing in Youngstown, OH as a steel worker. In 1987, he moved with his family to Key Largo, FL to pursue a career in law enforcement as a Deputy Sheriff with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, which he loved until his retirement in October 2007.
Steve was recognized in the Keys as being one of the only deputies ever to be shot in the line of duty. In 1989, he was shot while responding to a burglary. He survived the ordeal with a positive attitude and a sense of humor and returned to work just 5 months later. He then suffered a heart attack while working the Fourth of July parade in Key Largo in 2006. His colleagues provided CPR until EMT’s arrived. He retired in 2007. In his retirement, Steve enjoyed going to lunch everyday with his son and his friends and socializing with the locals.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane (Mihalik), of 34 years, his daughter Nicole McDermott (Patrick) of Tallahassee, FL and his son Stephen Kalogeras (Tania) of Key Largo. Steve was also the proud grandpa of Hailey and Charley Kalogeras and Lillian McDermott, who all loved him very much.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Peter, who died in childhood. He is also survived by his brother, Peter Kalogeras (Cindy) and his sister Helen Miller (Arthur). He also leaves behind seven nieces and nephews.
We will all miss him very much.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. until the Funeral service begins at 1:00 p.m., at Allen-Beyer Funeral Home, 101640 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo. Private burial will take place at a later date in South Florida National Cemetery, Lake Worth, FL.
