Raymond Lee Motley

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Raymond Motley, aged 66, who left us unexpectedly on November 12, 2024, at Baptist Health Mariners Hospital, in Tavernier FL.  Raymond was born on September 10, 1958, in Danville, Virginia, to Florence Lee Motley (Reaves) and Johnnie Motley Jr.


Raymond's early years were spent in Pennsylvania County, before moving to Columbus, Ohio, where he worked as a construction foreman for many years. He later retired to the beautiful surroundings of Key West, Florida, where he embraced the tranquility of life by the sea.


Raymond is preceded in death by his father, Johnnie Motley Jr.; his sister, Nancy Gunter; his daughter, Bre’Anna Golden; and his son, James Wellman. He is survived by his mother, Florence Lee Motley of Danville, Virginia; his sister, Lidia Bowman (James) of Danville, Virginia; and brothers, Bobby Motley and Junior Motley, both of Columbus, Ohio. Raymond also leaves behind his son, Raymond Lamar Motley of Columbus, Ohio, along with his daughters Meia Pearson and Sheena Wellman, both of Columbus, Ohio.


He will be fondly remembered as a devoted grandfather to his granddaughters Bre’Elle Nicole and Kay'lani Golden, and four additional granddaughters from Columbus, Ohio; ten grandsons, with eight from Columbus, one from West Jefferson, Ohio, and one from Louisville, Kentucky; and a great granddaughter, Nalu Jones, and great grandson, Rahizel Brooks, both from Louisville and West Jefferson, respectively. Additionally, Raymond is cherished by a host of nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

Raymond will always be remembered for his free spirit and his relentless ability to make friends wherever he went. His joyful humor and carefree attitude left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed.


Rest peacefully, Raymond. We love you and look forward to the day when we meet again.
