Norman Higgins

August 15, 1949 — December 21, 2016

Norman Peter Higgins, age 67, of Key Largo, FL, passed away unexpectedly on December 21, 2016.  He was born in Merrill, WI on August 15, 1949 to Eugene and Elsa (nee Sundell) Higgins. Raised in Chicago, Norman was proud of his Irish and Chicago heritage and he loved all his friends and family there.

He married Elaine Moran on June 13, 1992 at the Statute of Christ in​Key Largo, FL. They were married for over 24 years. Norman served in the USMC during the Vietnam conflict.

Norman moved to Key Largo in the late 70’s. He lived a life of community service. His recognitions and contributions to the community will be felt for years to come. His favorite events included the Key Largo 5K race, the Annual Marine Corps Birthday Party, and the Key Largo St. Patrick's Day Celebration.

Currently, he served as a long-standing Commissioner on the Key Largo Wastewater Treatment District. He was Commander of the Upper Keys VFW Post 10211, as well as being an active member in American Legion Post 333. Norman was also a proud brother of the Florida Keys Lodge 336 Free & Accepted Masons, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of MAHI Temple of Shriners International, and a member of the Upper Keys Shrine Club and MAHI Conch Riders.

Norman's larger-than-life personality, humorous stories, and joyful laughter will be missed.

Norman was predeceased by his father Eugene, and his brothers: David, Michael, and Edward; as well as a nephew David Jr. He is survived by his wife Elaine Moran Higgins; his mother Elsa of Merrill, WI; sister Marian (husband David Burnett) Higgins of College Station, TX; Stepdaughter Megan McCready (husband Micah) Kossove of Jupiter, FL; His Beloved Grandchildren: Kate “Cagney” Kossove, James “Duke” Kossove and Jonathan “Bogie” Kossove; Stepsons: Robert (wife Sandy) McCready of Palm Beach Gardens, FL and Mark McCready of Jupiter, FL; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Caribbean Club in Key Largo, FL.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
