Key Largo

Michael R. Butler 71, passed away on Thursday Oct.26, 2023 at his home in Key largo.  He was the son of Alice Butler of Key Largo and the Late Harold R. Butler.

Mike was born Feb.12,1952 In Middletown NY. He graduated from Middletown High in 1970 and then served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was also a volunteer member of the Wallkill Fire Dept. in Middletown N.Y. In later years he moved to Key Largo Florida.  He lived with his partner Linda Stilman and his stepson Derek Stilman in Miami. He served as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts for many years which he enjoyed with his stepson.  He loved and was very proud of his stepson Derek.

He was the owner of a Fire Security Business in Miami for many years. In recent years while living in Key Largo he enjoyed boating. You could always find him Thursday nights volunteering at the American Legion Jam. If you knew Mike, he lived his life to the fullest and enjoyed pushing the boundaries. And speaking of pushing boundaries One time he saw the potential of a snow covered road. He strapped on some skis, hooked the tow rope to the back of his brother Larry’s car and was skiing down the road. Apparently, Larry wasn’t driving fast enough, and he took off downhill past the car and met up with the next car and knocked on the guy's window to pull over!! And his life consisted of many stories as such. And we can’t forget how he loved his dog Bono.

Survivors include his mother Alice L. Butler of Key Largo, his stepson Derek Stilman and wife Qi, Brother Lawrence Butler and his wife Nancy of Otisvill,  sisters Diane Horner and husband Jerry of NY and Key Largo,  Nancy Butler and partner Al Dewitt of Otisville, Stephen Butler of Otisville, and Elaine Butler of Middletown. His niece Colleen Andersen and husband Jim, and grandniece Noelle. Josh and Selina Horner of Otisville N Y. Preceded by his nephew James B. Giveans(Jimmy).

Donations can be made to American Legion post 333, 2 Seagate Key Largo, Fl. 33037.
