June grew up in Afton, Virginia, graduating from Nelson County High School in Waynesboro, VA and the School of Nursing at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She moved to Marathon in 1968, worked as an Operating Room Nurse, and later an Operating Room Supervisor at Fisherman’s Hospital. After many years of service, June joined the Board of Trustees at Fisherman’s Hospital. She later changed careers and worked in all aspects of radio broadcasting and as a part owner of WFFG-AM and WMUM-FM in Marathon. June was active at the Marathon Yacht Club, International Order of the Blue Gavel Auxiliary and Marathon Chamber of Commerce. June was an outstanding member of the community and often volunteered for many events, including the July 4th Celebrations at Sombrero Beach.
June is survived by her life partner of 30-years, Thomas J. Dowdell III, her siblings, Dawn Irvine Freese and Dean Irvine, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, good friends, and loving family.
