CAPT. JOHN LEE FICKINGER
FICKINGER, John "Lee" of Islamorada, Florida passed away on Friday, May 24th, 2013 at age 71. Lee succumbed to a brief but valiant battle with lung cancer. He was born April 5, 1942 in Jersey City, NJ to the late John and Ruth Fickinger. Lee was the beloved husband of Linda Fickinger. Following school, Lee served his country in the United States Air Force as a medic and x-ray technician. He was stationed overseas in Japan where he became a martial arts expert. Following his military career, Lee was employed as a law enforcement officer by the Prince George's County Police Department in Maryland, where he served until retirement. It was in Ocean City, MD that Lee developed his passion for sportfishing which then lead him to Islamorada in the late 80's where he continued his new career as a USCG licensed Merchant Marine Officer. Lee's life adventures included advanced open water scuba diving, sportfishing guide and top tournament observer for the International Game Fish Association, which ultimately took him around the world in pursuit of exotic gamefish for the catch and release program. Lee and his wife enjoyed traveling and their adventures took them from Africa, to Ireland, to Alaska and beyond. Lee is survived by his loving wife Linda, daughter Ashlee Harper of Key Largo, FL, grandchildren Joshua and Kathryn Grace, son Kurt Schachner of Boynton Beach, FL and sister Win McCann and her husband, Joseph of The Woodlands, TX. Lee touched so many lives through his bigger than life spirit and fabulous laugh. A celebration of Lee's life will take place at a later date, including a scattering of his ashes along the reef line of the Florida Keys. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the VNA/Hospice of the Florida Keys, 92001 Overseas Hwy. Tavernier, FL 33070 or to the IGFA Observer Training Program @ IGFTO PO Box 123, Bristol, Rhode Island 02809.
