Harriet Metz Armbruster, age 97, of Tavernier, FL, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2016, at home with her loving husband. She was born in Lockport, NY to Reverend William Metz and Minerva (nee Lamphear) Metz. Due to her father being a minister, she lived in many New England towns before getting married. She married Edward Armbruster on July 15, 1944 by her father in Universalist Church in Central Square, NY. She and her husband lived in Amityville, NY, and Massapequa, NY, where they raised their three children, until they finally retired and moved to Tavernier, FL.
She graduated from St. Lawrence University and Oswego State Teachers College. She became an elementary school teacher.
She was a member of Burton Memorial United Methodist Church, where she learned to play the organ at the age of 75, and Church of the Larger Fellowship. She worked in the food pantry at Burton Memorial United Methodist Church and was a member of their Women’s Bible Study group. She loved to take pictures of church events and activities to share with the congregation. She was also the Treasurer of Hammer Point Association for many years, and a member of the Garden Club of the Upper Keys.
She is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Edward Armbruster;3 children: Cathie (husband Don) Spruck of Massapequa, NY; Mary Lou (husband Mark) Svencer of Mystic, CT; and Captain Edward “Skip” (wife Leslie) Armbruster of Ramona, CA;8 Grandchildren: Leigh (husband Darren) Grammich; Allison (husband Jeff) DeLuccia; Meredith (husband Mike) Green; Nicholas (wife Susan) Svencer; LCDR Christopher (wife Colleen) Svencer; LT Gregory (wife Nicolle) Svencer; Joshua (wife Tara) Armbruster; and Justin Armbruster. She is also survived by 17 Great Grandchildren.
Harriet had many interests and passions. She wrote in her journal everyday recounting the day’s activities which documents her family’s history. Harriet loved boating, swimming in the canal, gardening and bird watching. She loved to play the piano. But most of all, Harriet loved her husband, being on the water, her family, and her martini while watching the sunset.
