Eugene Smith

May 17, 1930 — July 15, 2017

Eugene Smith "Smitty" age 87, passed away on July 15, 2017 after suffering a stroke two weeks earlier. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Diane; stepson Dale Jennings (Debby); sister Winifred Fontenot of Louisiana; brother Willard Smith of Kansas; 3 grandchildren and their spouses; 6 great-grandchildren and lots of nieces, nephews, and in-laws. Gene was born in Florida and raised in Georgia until he was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve in the Korean War. After his service he worked as a crane operator at Leonard Bros. Inc. in Miami until he retired in Key Largo in 1977. He then worked at his favorite and final career as a lobster fisherman for the next 35 years. Smitty was a good, hardworking man and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Memorial gifts in his honor can be made to Hospice of the Florida Keys, 92001 Overseas Highway, Tavernier, FL 33070. At the request of the deceased and his family, no services were held. We will spread his ashes at "Smitty's Rock" on a yet to be determined date.
