Dwight Beal

May 4, 1945 — October 28, 2018

On October 28, 2018 Dwight “Ike” Beal (73) left this world in peace. Karen, his loving wife of 46 years was by his side. Natives of Pittsburgh, Ike and Karen came to Key Largo in 1972 on their honeymoon and stayed. Ike worked in many different jobs over the years - but his pride was serving his community for 30 years in the Key Largo Volunteer Fire Department and Key Largo Volunteer Ambulance Corps as well as Monroe County Fire Rescue. Through his leadership, distinguished service and passion for his work, he became a high ranking officer in both fire departments.

Ike was always ready to learn, inspire and teach, put the interests of others before himself and keep fellow first responders safe. Through his dedication to the Florida Keys community, both on the job and off, Ike touched many lives. His colleagues and friends admired his strength of character, exemplified by his integrity and hard work. They loved him for making them feel at ease in his company and his wry sense of humor, which was signaled by a hearty laugh.

Some of his happiest times after retiring were spent with his sons and grandchildren in Pennsylvania, where he often spent days tinkering with the tractors and heavy equipment on his farm.

He will be greatly missed by family and community. Ike is survived by wife, Karen; sons, Troy and Brandon Beal; and 7 grandchildren.
