Donald McDaniel Causey Jr of Key Largo, Florida peacefully passed away on January 13, 2024, after a lengthy battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife, Maria del Carmen Causey.
Don was born in Whiteville, NC to Donald McDaniel and Rachel Bryan Causey. After graduating from Pickens High School in Pickens, SC, Don attended the Citadel College in Charleston SC for one year. Then he joined the US Army and was stationed in the Tyrol region of Italy as a nuclear artillery specialist. He returned to the US and attended the university of Hawaii in Honolulu where he got a degree in English and then a masters in Journalism form the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
After a year as a professor at Peace College in Raleigh, NC Don went on to be both a kids author as well as an investigative reporter with the News and Observer in Raleigh, NC. During his time as journalist, he had a passion as an investigative reporter, notably spending weeks in migrant camps in NC reporting on working conditions as well as reporting on a local biker gang and their views. He then moved to New York where he worked with Outdoor Life magazine, eventually becoming the editor. After leaving the magazine, Don made a career out of his hobby and founded two very successful newsletters on Hunting and Fishing, the Hunting and Angling Report. For the rest of his career, he was able to spend his time hunting and fishing across the globe while reporting on his adventures in the newsletters. Don also worked with Global Rescue as an advocate for hunters and fishermen to protect themselves in case of disaster with evacuation assistance.
Don was an avid hunter and fisherman, traveling the globe and experiencing adventures beyond most imaginations. He also enjoyed entertaining friends and family and is survived by his wife Carmen as they have always cherished visiting family across the globe.
